Hunters - Be Prepared!
Iowa Weather is Unpredictable

Iowa Weather - Current Conditions

Iowa Weather - Typical Conditions

Since Iowa is located in America's Midwest, the state is characterized by all four seasons - Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Weather conditions very widely from season to season.

Iowa has cold winters (December - February) with temperatures dropping to below 12 degrees Fahrenheit in the north to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit in the south.

The state's summer (June - August) temperatures increase steadily until averaging out in July around 70 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The highest temperature recorded was 118 degrees Fahrenheit at Keokuk on July 20, 1934. The lowest temperature recorded was minus 47 degrees Fahrenheit at Washta on January 12, 1912 and again at Elkader on February 3, 1996.

The states average yearly precipitation ranges from wet in the east and south at 32 - 36 or more inches to the drier northwest areas with less than 28 inches.

Weather conditions can change rapidly in Iowa. Here is a short diary of the 2007 first shotgun season:

Saturday, December 1: Rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow all mixed up during the first day of the shotgun season. The temperature went from 35 degrees Fahrenheit to 60 degrees to 20 degrees Fahrenheit all in one day. It was a miserable day, that ended up producing all the big bucks.
Sunday, December 2: Damp, cold and windy with gusts up to 20 plus miles per hour.
Monday, December 3: Around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, partly cloudy, light wind.
Tuesday, December 4: Around 45 degrees Fahrenheit, sunshine, no wind. A picture perfect day.
Wednesday, December 5: Morning light snow, all day cold and very windy again.
